In Joomla! 6.0, the behavior of submenus changed in the default Cassiopeia template. Submenus are no longer expanded by default and a dropdown toggle symbol is shown.
This behavior may be desirable in many scenarios but not when the submenu is used in a sidebar, as in my case.
Fortunately there is a solution: the behavior can be changed by overriding one file in Cassiopeia, using a template override. What needs to change is the mod_menu module in Cassiopeia.

- mod_menu (under Modules)
- Editor
- html/mod_menu under /templates/cassiopeia
- Edit default.php
